Lualiga Pitts Dyson Ferguson Alcorn attended Columbian Heights High School, graduating in 1929. The school was located in Winston-Salem's Columbian Heights district, a neighborhood established in 1892 for African-American homeowners. She then attended Winston-Salem Teachers College (now WSSU), from which she graduated in 1935. Alcorn received additional training at N.C. A&T State University and Columbia University and earned a library degree from North Carolina Central University. She spent most of her life as a Media Specialist for Greensboro (N.C.) City Schools.
Alcorn was active in many organizations, including the North Carolina Libary Association, North Carolina Teachers Association (Greensboro Unit), N.C. Negro Library Association, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She also participated in alumni events and organizations for her high school and college, serving as Assistant Secretary of the WSSU Alumni Association at its founding in the 1950s, and as chairperson of its Constitution Committee in the 1970s. She attended WSSU and Columbian Heights alumni activities throughout her life, which ended on October 20, 1990.
The Alcorn Papers primarily document Columbian Heights High School and its graduating class of 1929. Materials in this collection include three differing publications related to the high school, all of which appear to function as annuals: the Crimson and White, a joint effort with the Slater State Normal School; the Maroon and Gold, a hardbound yearbook; and The Columbian, a soft-cover booklet whose June edition also functioned as an annual. The Alcorn Papers also include the contents of scrapbook containing photographs, programs, and a class directory from the 50th and 55th year reunions of the Columbian High School Class of 1929. The Winston-Salem Teachers College patch appears to date to 1935.
